Sam Smith created this album, The Lonely Man, as an exploration of his loneliness.  He has never been in a relationship at the young age of 22, and he remarks that calling his mom from London and actually admitting that he was lonely was the bravest thing he has ever done.

What initially was an exploration of his feelings about loneliness and unrequited love progressed into an acceptance of himself as completed the album and fell in love with his own loneliness.

In Stay with Me, Sam Smith expresses a deeper, darker side of humanity that toes the line of being socially acceptable.  According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the third tier, after physiological and safety needs, is the need for love and belonging.  Humans need to love and be loved by others and Sam Smith plays off this basic need in his song.

He takes us through the aftermath of a one-night stand and the wanting of more.  He plays on the insecurity of people as he recants the night.  He wants the woman to "stay with [him]" as he feels validation from her soft caresses and the acceptance from the night before.

Even though he and this other woman know almost nothing about each other, the connection is deeper and more intimate than most of us experience during our daily routine; One where laundry, groceries, cooking, cleaning, working, and the mundane take precedent.

That's why we enjoy flirting with members of the opposite sex.  We see the potential to explore each other both physically and emotionally.  We want someone to complete us and become the yin to our yang.

However, some people see the plight of single people as filled with struggle and frustration underscored by Louis C.K's comedy as seen below.

So why do single people have hope that this time will be different?  That this one night stand will lead to something more lasting?  We allow our emotions to mislead us, confuse us, and perplex us when our actions go against our innate belief of who we are.

At one point in the song, Sam asks, "Why am I so emotional?  No it's not a good look, gain some self-control.  And deep down I know this never works, but you can lay with me so it doesn't hurt."

Once we enter the madness of illogical thinking and fantasizing, we have to continue the love story and hope that the presence of another will temporarily suppress our overarching loneliness.
